General
This recreational volleyball competition is a six aside indoor game, run by Pioneer Volleyball Club Incorporated and played on Thursday evenings at Pioneer Leisure Centre. Teams may be mixed or single sex. The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment for all! We cater for anyone from experienced players to those wishing to learn, as the competition is structured according to skill level.
Remember that this is recreational volleyball and that you’re not playing for the “Championship of the world as we know it”. We expect you to play your volleyball with an appropriate attitude ie good, positive and healthy. Cheating will not be tolerated.
Structure
There are 17 matches, 9 of which are before Christmas, resuming after the holiday break in late January to finish in March 2011.
Games are 1 hour long from 6:30pm, 7:30pm or 8:30pm. Your team will play at a different time each week.
If you have a 6:30 pm game, please help the Pioneer Leisure Centre staff put up the nets, and help take them down if you have the late game
The game on the first playing night, 14 October, will be a grading game, where teams are graded according to their ability, at the sole discretion of the organisers, and then placed into a division of six teams.
Round 1 commences the following Thursday 22 October. You will then play 3 rounds each of 5 games.
On 17 March 2011 there is a finals night. All teams play on this night

Team squads and player registration
Players in recreational volleyball competitions are required be registered with Canterbury Volleyball Association and Volleyball New Zealand. These organisations request that data be collected from teams on the numbers and type of person playing volleyball in New Zealand. The end use of this data is to provide leverage for funding. Please indulge us here and take the time to fill out all the details on your entry form. Remember that you will need to supply this data to qualify for the discounted entry fee.
The organisers expect that team squads will remain approximately the same for the duration of the competition and will not be altered to gain advantage, especially toward the end of the competition and the finals night. Remember that players not registered to a team cannot play the game. The organisers reserve the right to warn and if necessary, deduct points for breaches of the above.
Other costs
There is a door fee of $3.00 for each player per game per week. Some of the door fee assists Canterbury Volleyball's education programs.
Spectator entry is free. However, spectators dressed in sports gear may be questioned at the door upon entry and will be unceremoniously ejected from the stadium if found to be playing and have not paid their door fee!
Need to up skill?
We are again offering a free coaching night on 7 October for those entrants wanting to learn about the game. We will hopefully be able to give you an insight into the basic skills required and the structure and objectives of the game. The coaching night is at Pioneer Leisure Centre from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Please advise if your team be attending.
Rules
This competition is played under the recreational volleyball rules of the Canterbury Volleyball Association Inc
http://www.cva.org.nz/Content/Detail.aspx?ID=157
Key rule concepts:
In this competition, a match is played over five sets, but play continues for the whole hour, even if the result is decided before time.
Sets are scored as first to 25 points with a 2 point advantage, and sets are not capped.
The match is completed by the sounding of a hooter or whistle by the organisers at 30 minutes past the hour or at the organiser’s discretion. At this time, a rally in play is completed and the point awarded.
This final set will count toward the match result if 15 points or more have been scored by at least one of the teams with a minimum of a 2 point advantage.
The ball contacting the roof or part thereof is deemed out of play.
Unsportsmanlike behaviour will not be tolerated. The organisers reserve the right to deduct points for this breach.
Competition points
Points will be awarded as follows:
2 points for a win
1 for a draw
1 bonus point for each set won to a maximum of 3 bonus points for a match.
Promotion and relegation
At the end of rounds one and two, teams will be promoted and demoted according to their placing in that round. In general, the top two teams in a division will move up to the next division and the bottom two teams will move to the division below. The conveners may use their discretion and promote or demote less than two teams.
In the event of teams being tied for points at the end of a round, then the winner of the match in that round between the two teams in question will be declared the higher placed team. Should that match be drawn, the winner of the first set in that game will be declared the higher placed team.
Score sheets and results
The score sheet for each match should be filled in correctly and signed as correct by the team captains at the conclusion of a match. These sheets will be collected by the court controller at the end of each night. Results will be available on the web at www.pioneervolleyball.org.nz as soon as practicable thereafter.
Please note that in the event of a dispute, the final result will more than likely depend on how accurately a score sheet has been completed. It is important that the correct scores are recorded in the correct place and that the score sheet is signed by both captains as being correct.
Defaults
Should you need to default a match (away, sick, etc), you are expected to advise the organisers of your intention. This is as much about courtesy to your opposition as anything. Contact Richard Gillespie by email debandrich@clear.net.nz or phone or text to 027 431 7994. Make sure that you get a response. If you get no response then keep trying or try something else. Do not assume that your message has been received unless you get a response.
Definition: A team will be deemed to be in default of their match should they be unable to field a minimum of four players registered to their team, within 10 minutes of the official start time. At this time, the win by default must be claimed. The match may continue by agreement, but the match will be declared a default, with the winning team gaining the maximum five points for the match. Wins by default may not be claimed retrospectively.
The tournament draw
The tournament draw will be emailed to your team contacts. It can also be found on the web at www.pioneervolleyball.org.nz or linked from www.cva.org.nz. Please indicate on the entry form if you require a printed copy of the draw.
What if I don't have a team?
Individual players wishing to play who are not able to put together their own team should contact us too. We may be able to put you in contact with others so that you can form your own team.
Volleyballs
Teams are expected to provide their own volleyballs. However, some match balls are provided courtesy of the organisers. These are not to be for warm ups and they must be returned at the conclusion of the match. Should a team not return a supplied ball, you 0 be billed for the cost of a replacement, and competition points may be deducted. The organisers reserve the right to remove the provision of match balls at any time.
